LA: Mid-1800′s U.S. History: May 2014
To better understand the 1800’s, the District Teacher Librarians helped with a fun project based on developing background knowledge of the era. Students at Highland Jr. High have been reading The Adventures of Tom Sawyer as they end the year. Students chose group topics – Technology; Sports and Leisure; Medicine, including Herbal Gardens and Remedies; Slavery Music; and Religions of the African Americans in Slavery. The DTLs assisted the students in locating information, writing information in their own words and citing their sources. Power Points were created by the groups and were presented to principals, counselors and fellow classmates. The students studying herbal remedies shared several kinds of herbal teas as well as a number of plant specimens.
